Dinner at the Ahwahnee: Reservations, Dress Code, and What to Expect

After spending the entire day hiking one of the most strenuous trails in the country, we wanted to celebrate properly, with something rich, indulgent, and maybe even fancy.

So we made dinner reservations at the iconic Ahwahnee in Yosemite Valley.

It seemed like the perfect way to mark the accomplishment of summiting Half Dome.

How Far in Advance Should You Book Dinner at the Ahwahnee?

In general, reservations are strongly recommended, especially during peak seasons. The restaurant encourages guests to reserve ahead of time because availability can fill quickly, particularly for dinner.

That said, you don’t necessarily need to book months in advance. We didn’t plan our dinner celebration months ahead. We booked after arriving in Yosemite, just a few days before the reservation, and it worked out great.

The Dress Code Situation

When we visited in September 2023, the hotel was in the middle of a major multi-year renovation project that included structural upgrades and a kitchen remodel. During that time:

  • The main dining room was often inaccessible.
  • Guests were served in alternate dining areas.
  • Buffet service was used while the kitchen was under construction.
  • Drapes and temporary partitions covered renovation zones.

Essentially, the hotel was still operating — but not at full grandeur. The historic dining room itself had been closed earlier in 2023 for renovations and only reopened later that year. I was a little bummed to not experience the iconic dining room, but I was hoping the experience would still be grand.

Since we booked our reservation only a few days ahead of time, we hadn’t necessarily planned for a fancy dress code.

Dinner at the Ahwahnee traditionally requires what they call “resort casual” attire — things like long pants, collared shirts, dresses, or similar clothing. Hiking attire is typically discouraged.

But we’d been camping out of our trailer for more than ten days. We ONLY packed hiking clothes.

Showing Up Straight from Half Dome

We decided to show up and ask forgiveness rather than permission as regards to our attire.

Directly after finishing the grueling hike, we made it to our car, drove to the Ahwahnee and found a parking spot, cleaned up as best we could in a bathroom, and showed up to check in for our reservation.

Because of the ongoing renovations, they were gracious about the dress code and showed us to our table.

And I sincerely hope that’s always the case, because anyone who has just climbed Half Dome deserves a lavish meal.

The Meal: Exactly What We Needed

Dinner was buffet style and cost about $60 per person. It delivered exactly what we were hoping for. It was rich, hearty, plentiful, and lavish.

Chris especially loved the prime rib. It was easily the best buffet meal we had ever had.

Was it truly exceptional, chef-inspired cuisine? Or were we simply so drained from the hike that everything tasted incredible? Could it be both?

The full dining room is famous for its soaring ceilings, massive windows, and grand chandeliers. Again, I was bummed to miss out on it. But more importantly, that meal was earned.

Would it have been nicer dressed up in fancy clothes and sitting in the fully restored dining room? Maybe, but I’m not sure we would have appreciated it as much.

I’d love to return one day and experience the Ahwahnee dining room in its full glory! Next time we’ll make sure to pack a nicer outfit to keep in the car, just in case.

Hi! We are going next week (June 2026). I checked the Ahwahnee for dinner and it looks like now it’s $95 per person, prix fixe. I passed on it!
