Bigfoot Pizza or Big Big Cheese? A Random Memory of the 1993 Pizza Wars

A few months ago, I randomly had a pizza-related childhood memory resurface that raised a lot of questions.

Big Big Cheese or Bigfoot Pizza?

Of course you know the Little Caesar’s mascot in a toga that says “pizza pizza.” I had a memory of Little Caesar’s advertising the heck out of their latest pizza creation – the Big Big Cheese. Except in my memory I was remembering it as something like the Bigfoot Pizza.

So when I was a kid around the time this was being advertised, my brother was desperate to have this Bigfoot Pizza. It was a huge rectangular pizza. Today I’m not sure why anyone would want to eat anything marketed with the word “foot” in it, but it was a hot item.

My parents absolutely refused to buy it. No amount of pleading from my brother mattered. This pizza was a hard no.

Seventh Birthday Celebration

So when my seventh birthday rolled around, my brother took the opportunity to convince me that this would be a perfect way to celebrate my birthday. Surely my parents wouldn’t say no to a birthday wish, right?

But it turns out it was really easy for them to say no. I really wanted to please my brother for whatever reason. I didn’t really feel any sort of urgency to have this Bigfoot Pizza, but opportunities to be on my brother’s good side were rare.

My mom finally agreed to let me have this Bigfoot pizza — but only if I didn’t have a birthday party.

At seven years old, I willingly gave up a birthday party so my brother could finally experience this mythical pizza. On the big day, the pizza arrived. Expectations were sky-high. And then… I didn’t like it.

At that point, we had made such a big deal about it — the asking, the bargaining, the sacrifice — that I pretended to like it. I smiled while I ate and acted thrilled.

1993 Pizza Wars

When this memory crept up a few weeks ago, I did some diving in the deepest corners of the internet to try to figure out if this was some sort of fever dream or a real thing. In my heart of hearts, it’s a real memory – The Bigfoot Pizza from Little Caesar’s.

And it turns out it was a real thing! But I got my details a bit confused. Turns out there were competing advertisements between Little Caesar’s and Pizza Hut. The good ol’ 1993 Pizza Wars. It turns out Little Caesar’s brought the big party-sized rectangular pizza to the table first, but it was called the Big Big Cheese. The Bigfoot Pizza was Pizza Hut’s response. I ended up calling my brother to see if he remembered any of this. Sure enough, he had fond memories of the Bigfoot Pizza from Pizza Hut!

Though he didn’t remember snaking me out of my birthday party, haha!

Adjusted for 2026 Inflation

So then I got my mom involved. Why in the world were my parents so opposed to trying this pizza? With six kids, it seems like they’d be all over having an easy dinner that could happily feed everyone.

In my deep dive through the internet cache, I learned that the Bigfoot Pizza from Pizza Hut was a whopping $11, very expensive compared to the $8 Big Big Cheese from Little Caesar’s.

With 2026 inflation we’re looking at around $26 for the Bigfoot Pizza compared to around $20 for the Big Big Cheese.

My parents were so worried about spending $26 that I had to skip a party? I mean, how much does pin the tail on the donkey cost anyway?

This story is probably a little embarrassing for my poor momma, but I honestly just think it’s hilarious! Us kids had it rough in the 90’s!
