Chris turned 40 at the end of 2025, and I wanted to do something special without throwing a big party that he wouldn’t appreciate. So I gave him what I knew he’d appreciate the most: 40 slices of pizza!

Our twenty-fifth stop was: Pauly’s Pizzeria & Sub Co.
1624 E Saint Patrick St, Rapid City, SD 57703

Location and Vibe

This was our second pizza stop during our trip to South Dakota, but this time in Rapid City. We ended up being very impressed by Rapid City along with the other places we visited in South Dakota. This pizza location was close to several fun things to do. The restaurant was clean and the employees friendly. You order and then pick a seat. It was a simple but clean and friendly place to eat.

The Pizza

We learned our lesson from our last pizza stop in South Dakota and ordered much less pizza. We ordered the cheese bread with ranch and two 12″ pizzas – a half cheese/half pepperoni and a Hawaiian. We stick to the basics on a first visit and try some more variety on repeat visit.

Like our prior pizza stop in South Dakota, the pizza was Midwestern Tavern style, though the quality at Pauly’s was higher than Cruizzers for sure.

The cheese bread was good, but the ranch dressing for dipping was better. When you dipped the cheese bread into the ranch, you taste the ranch. The cheese bread alone was missing something. The ranch was way good though.

The pepperoni was the spicy cup pepperoni that I don’t like as much, which is why we did half cheese and half pepperoni. The pizza itself was a good round pizza – it had good cheese, good dough, and a good aftertaste from the sauce.

That said, Midwestern Tavern style is definitely not our thing.

The Score

Chris rated the pizza a 6.8.

Definitely better than the similar style pizza at Cruizzers, but still just not our thing. We appreciated the higher quality of ingredients here though!
